What is Fair Saturday?
Fair Saturday is a global arts and culture movement founded in Bilbao, Spain.
Each year, on the Saturday after Black Friday, communities, cultural organizations and individuals participating in the Fair Saturday movement present a celebration of the power of the arts, culture and heritage to change the world and create a more just society.
For many people across the globe, this time of year includes holidays and traditions that give thanks for life, family and community, affirm our beliefs, and celebrate our common humanity. In that spirit, Fair Saturday claims the essential power of culture and empathy to create and celebrate the world we want to live in.
Fair Saturday is a day when we can all show the world what we are made of and what we can build together.
Fair Saturday Comes to Quincy in 2019
The City of Quincy is proud to announce that it is the first official U.S. city to partner and to participate in the Fair Saturday movement.
Quincy has an almost 70 year-old tradition of bringing people together in celebration of the holiday season on the weekend after Thanksgiving. Therefore, it is only fitting that the city is now part of a global network of cities and communities stretching from Lima, Peru to Lisbon, Portugal, and from Scotland, U.K. to Helsinki, Finland that publicly proclaims their belief in social justice and celebrates the power of culture to create the world we want to live in.
What is Fair Saturday Quincy?
Saturday November 30th 2019 is the first Fair Saturday Quincy.
Fair Saturday Quincy is a collaborative partnership between the City of Quincy and the Fair Saturday Foundation to bring Fair Saturday to our community.
Fair Saturday is unlike most traditional arts and music festivals in that it is not organized around a single cultural activity (music, performing arts, visual arts, etc.). Instead, it is comprised of a broad range of cultural activities created by different cultural organizations, artists, performers and everyday people from across the community. You don’t have to be a professional to be involved. This is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate their own creativity and cultural identity and for all the voices of Quincy to be heard and celebrated together.
Once performers decide to create an event or add a planned event to Fair Saturday Quincy they also choose a charity or community organization that they want to support. Then, when they register their event at fairsaturday.org the performers also decide how they want to support their partner charity or community organization and to celebrate the contribution they make to our communities and city. It can include, but is not limited to:
- Giving them a platform at the event to explain what they do and the difference they make
- Fundraising for the organization during the event itself
- Giving them free tickets to event
- Involving the organization in planning, creating, staging, the event
- Something else even more appropriate and valuable
The Fair Saturday Quincy Steering Group
Fair Saturday Quincy is a collaborative partnership between the City of Quincy and the Fair Saturday Foundation.
The Fair Saturday Steering Committee is a group of people from across the city who have come together to help make Fair Saturday happen and support everyone who wants to be involved. We do not decide what happens.
We help and support Fair Saturday Quincy participants and raise the profile of their events through an overall city wide marketing campaign, help you with the practicalities of running an event (if you need it), and we liaise with the Fair Saturday Foundation to help raise the profile of Quincy within the global family of Fair Saturday cities.
